Our Next Event

Event: Zikr and Sufi Storytelling.

Facilitator: Neil Douglas-Klotz (Saadi Shakur Chishti).
Venue: Sanctuary, Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EL.
Date: Wednesday 12 June 2019.
Time: Registration: 6pm-6.30pm. Event: 6.30pm-8.30pm.
Event Description: Sufi stories are traditionally told in an atmosphere that combines meditation in various forms as well as a chanted, sometimes musical practice called zikr (remembrance of the ground of unity). The evening will take place in this more devotional, meditative framework rather than an academic one. There will also be time for questions.

Neil Douglas-Klotz is the author of many books on the "native" Middle Eastern tradition and the Aramaic words of Jesus. His most recent title is The Little Book of Sufi Stories (Hampton Roads, 2018). He is the student of the Chishti Sufi teacher, Hazrat Moineddin Jablonski.

"Neil Douglas-Klotz represents these stories as if he’s telling them live, giving the work an immediacy and charm that
makes its centuries-old tales relatable. The Little Book of Sufi Stories is an enjoyable collection." - Foreword Reviews.

"“These practical, ghostly, and often very funny tales come from a variety of Sufi works, including those by saints like Rumi as well as lay storytellers from Turkey and Persia….In addition to sharing serious lessons, Douglas-Klotz includes a host of popular, humorous characters that many readers will recognize—particularly Mullah Nasruddin, whose capers are well-known throughout the Muslim world…. This sampler of Sufi wisdom is a must-read for anyone interested in non-Western folktales.” - Publishers Weekly
